Arthritis, a condition affecting over 50 million Americans, is the leading cause of work disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Banner Physical Therapy reports a high number of patients suffering from arthritis and is actively working to alleviate their pain.

Chris Clendaniel, a physical therapist with Banner Physical Therapy, explains that "arthritis is a chronic condition caused by joint inflammation and pain," which can pose significant challenges in the workplace. Clendaniel notes that 40 to 50% of her patients are affected by some form of arthritis. "I see many patients that have daily difficulties with work or activities due to arthritis," she says.

The likelihood of being limited by arthritis increases as people remain longer in the workforce, whether engaged in physical labor or desk jobs. "Standing or even sitting at a desk all day can be painful to individuals suffering from arthritis," Clendaniel adds.

Physical therapy is highlighted as an effective method for managing arthritic pain and improving movement through exercise. Joseph Davis, another physical therapist with Banner Health, states that "exercise works to rejuvenate your joints with movement by replenishing the fluid in all our joints."

Clendaniel emphasizes that exercises during physical therapy vary based on patient goals and limitations but generally focus on improving mobility and reducing pain. These exercises may include range-of-motion activities, strengthening muscles around joints, and tasks related to specific job functions.

"At home, patients can be active by doing aerobic work such as walking, biking, swimming or use of an elliptical which will also help get them back into the workforce," Clendaniel advises. She believes these activities can expedite recovery and aid in pain management.

Banner Physical Therapy operates under a joint venture between Banner Health and Select Medical’s Outpatient Division. With 60 locations across Arizona, they offer services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, sports medicine, and more.
