Arizona State Sen. Shawnna Bolick said the Biden administration's border policies have created an “open border crisis” that affects every state in the country. Bolick warned that the nation cannot afford to leave either the northern or southern borders unsecured.
“I was born in western Pennsylvania. We moved to Arizona in 2001,” Sen. Bolick wrote in an Oct. 4 social media post on X. “Every city, county, and state are border states due to the Biden-Harris open border crisis. We cannot afford to keep the northern or southern border open.”
According to an analysis of CBP data, there have been 452,520 total encounters in the Tucson Sector during fiscal year 2024, which is up 40.3% from last year’s number of 322,624 encounters.
During fiscal year 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) arrested 45,402 illegal aliens who have previous criminal convictions or who are wanted by law enforcement.
Approximately 16,465 of these arrests have been made by the U.S. Border Patrol, and 28,937 of these arrests have been made by the CBP’s Office of Field Operations. The CBP’s 2024 fiscal year runs from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.
CBP has reported more than 2.7 million illegal alien encounters during Fiscal Year 2024, while there were only 646,822 in Fiscal Year 2020.

Bolick has represented Arizona’s 2nd State Senate District since August 2023, when she was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Advisors to fill the seat vacated by retiring State Sen. Steve Kaiser (R-Phoenix).
She previously represented District 20 in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. Bolick also served on the Arizona State Board of Education’s Academic Standards Development Committee and was appointed to Arizona’s Early Childhood Education and Health Board by former Gov. Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.)
Bolick attended Syracuse University and received a master’s degree from American University.
A native of Pittsburgh, Penn., Bolick lives in Phoenix with her husband.
