The Cardinals' coaching staff treats each game as a unique challenge, with specific details and quirks that need to be addressed both before and after the game. Despite this approach, trends are important, especially considering the team has allowed 187 and 216 rushing yards in consecutive games. This is particularly concerning with an upcoming game against the run-focused 49ers.
Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis acknowledges the importance of addressing issues that transcend individual opponents. "There are things you have to identify no matter what opponent you are facing that we need to correct on our end no matter what," Rallis said. "That can be scheme-related, that can be technique-related, how we are practicing, how we have to train certain aspects better in (defending) the run game. Obviously, there are elements of who are we playing, what do they do well?"
The 49ers have managed to excel despite challenges such as Christian McCaffrey being on injured reserve without playing a snap this season. Jordan Mason has stepped up impressively, accumulating 447 yards at an average of 4.7 yards per carry so far.
Earlier in the season, the Cardinals held their ground against other teams' rushing attacks, allowing only 130 yards to the Bills and just 53 yards in a decisive win over the Rams. However, recent performances have been less effective.
Following their matchup with the 49ers, the Cardinals will face another road test against Green Bay Packers, who also emphasize their running game.
Rallis emphasized that sustained offensive drives could aid their defense by preventing fatigue but stressed that defensive performance ultimately determines their fate. "If you're tired," Rallis said, "get off the field."
