In 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared October 5 as World Teachers’ Day. The organization describes it as “a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education” and “to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.”

Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), which opened as District No. 69 in 1913, has long celebrated its teachers and staff. However, beyond celebrations, PVUSD focuses on making every day exemplary for both students and staff—a key goal in its strategic plan.

Employment choices often evolve with life circumstances. Salary and benefits remain significant factors, with approximately 85% of PVUSD’s budget allocated to these areas for nearly 3,400 employees. PVUSD has aimed to stay competitive with other districts in these respects.

Professional development and collaboration are critical components of a supportive workplace. PVUSD has integrated these into its strategic plan through professional development days and professional learning communities (PLCs). Additionally, mentorship, support, partnership, encouragement, and numerous daily interactions among teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers contribute to this collaborative environment.

Collaboration is a shared responsibility at PVUSD to enhance schools for students and staff alike. Schools serve as community hubs where members contribute in various ways—from providing academic support to chaperoning field trips or serving on district committees.

The sense of unity within PVUSD is notable; many employees consider themselves part of the "PV family." This unity is evident during events like new teacher orientation where former students return as educators. Dr. Karen Hudson exemplifies this spirit; currently in her 50th year teaching at PVSchools, she was recently named a 2025 recipient of the Travelers Award for Teaching Excellence by the National Education Association. The award recognizes excellence in practice, community engagement, and leadership in professional development.

“Thank you all for being a part of why so many teachers and staff continue to be #PVStrong and #PVProud!” stated Anne Greenberg on behalf of the Governing Board.
