PHOENIX (Sept. 16, 2024) -- In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Somos Banner Health is launching a series addressing the unique healthcare needs of Hispanic individuals and families by discussing prevalent diseases in the Hispanic community.

Studies indicate that Hispanics are 50% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than Caucasians, emphasizing the need for Hispanic families to educate themselves about this mental disease.

Key recommendations to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease include maintaining a healthy lifestyle: staying physically and mentally active, eating a balanced diet, reducing alcohol and tobacco use, ensuring quality sleep, and managing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

"It is imperative for Hispanic families to be proactive in understanding the risks and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Seeking timely medical attention and consulting a specialist as soon as memory loss signs are noticed is crucial for obtaining a better treatment outcome and improving quality of life," said Dr. Jeremy Pruzin, neurologist specializing in Dementia and other memory disorders at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix.

On Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Banner Alzheimer's Institute will host a bilingual class discussing “Alzheimer’s in the Hispanic Community: Prevention, Care, and How You Can Help,” at the Peoria Community Center, 8335 W. Jefferson St.

The free event will focus on brain health and Alzheimer’s disease prevention and treatment. Presentation topics will include prevention, diagnosis, current treatments, caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and opportunities for participation in research. All educational presentations will be in both Spanish and English. Registration is required. Call (602) 230-CARE or visit BannerHealth.com/AlzheimersHispanicCommunity to sign up.

Since its inception in 2006, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute has sought effective Alzheimer’s disease prevention therapies without losing another generation. It aims to establish new models of dementia care for patients and family caregivers while forging collaborations in biomedical research. The institute has contributed significantly to early detection, tracking, diagnosis, study of Alzheimer’s disease, and aims to find an effective prevention therapy by 2025. It includes pioneering initiatives like the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative alongside extensive research studies, clinical trials, comprehensive service programs for families and communities, leading brain imaging research programs, and strategic partnerships with public and private research organizations globally.
