From the dog days of training camp, unexpected ideas can emerge. For instance, guard Will Hernandez's old-timey mustache, grown during camp for a change of pace, has now become a permanent fixture on the team.
"There has been a decision made," Hernandez announced Thursday. "It's staying for the season. The people have spoken."
While attributing this decision to "the people" might seem exaggerated, it reflects reality. According to Hernandez, the mustache has "created a lot of camaraderie and good times," leading to numerous messages from fans expressing their approval.
"Really taking the time out of their day to let me know that they liked the mustache, so I thought you know what -- you've got to give the people what they want," he said.
In typical athlete fashion, Hernandez noted that his mustache is still a work in progress. "There is a lot of room for improvement."
Another area where improvement may be sought is Hernandez's professional future. Entering the final year of his contract and expressing happiness over teammate Hjalte Froholdt’s recent extension, Hernandez was asked about his own prospects for a new deal.
"You know this kind of deal, it's like being at the DMV; you never know," Hernandez remarked. "You might get your number called and all of a sudden it's two hours later and you've got to see what's going on. Who knows. I honestly don't think about it. I just play. Whatever happens, happens."
Now, attention turns to what lies ahead for both Hernandez and his notable mustache.
