Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) welcomed its largest-ever group of new students at the Fall 2024 New Student Orientation. A total of 617 students attended over two Saturdays and a Thursday evening, marking a significant milestone in PVCC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community.
This year’s orientation was more than just a meet-and-greet; it was an immersive experience that introduced students to the core values of PVCC. The event was a collaboration between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, involving Field of Interest (FOI) faculty, advising analysts, student peer leaders, and the Center for Performing Arts (CPA) team.
The day began with a reception at 8 a.m., where students enjoyed breakfast and explored essential services such as Financial Aid, Student Life, Career Services, and Disability Services. By 8:30 a.m., students moved to the CPA for a rock concert performed by PVCC’s faculty and staff rock band.
“Our orientation is designed to do more than just inform—it’s about creating a sense of belonging and community,” said Dr. Jana Schwartz, PVCC President. “We want our students to feel supported from day one.”
Mike Ho, Manager of Student Life and Leadership, reflected on the evolution of the New Student Orientation program. “When I was asked to plan Orientation, I realized that many elements were already happening in advising sessions, workshops, and the First Year Experience class,” Ho explained. “This allowed us to focus on enhancing students’ sense of belonging.”
This year’s theme, “Choose Your Own Adventure,” aimed to empower students as protagonists of their educational journeys. Breakout sessions allowed students to connect with peers and meet faculty who would guide them throughout their academic careers.
“As chemistry faculty and the STEM FOI Faculty Lead, I was excited to facilitate a STEM breakout session alongside our STEM Analyst and Peer Leader,” said Linda Stearns. “During the hour-long session, we gave our new STEM students tips for succeeding through a STEM-focused lens.”
Peer leaders played an instrumental role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. “The rock band and the kindness of the Peer Leaders really set this orientation apart,” said Addie Mattox, a PVCC Peer Leader.
For Peer Leader Alexis Duron, NSO highlighted PVCC’s student-centered approach. “The leadership team organizes the event to ensure incoming students feel comfortable in their new environment,” Duron said.
Feedback from students indicated newfound confidence about their journey at PVCC. One student shared during a breakout session: “I used to think community college was not for me but now I know I belong here.” Another commented: “I used to think I would struggle making friends but now I know there are so many opportunities.”
Kymore Sutherland shared her experience: "NSO was great! It introduced me to campus life and helped me meet advisors and peers in my FOI."
