The pads were on for the final open practice of training camp at State Farm Stadium on Wednesday. The Cardinals have a game here Saturday against the Saints, and perhaps it's timely that another team is coming.
The Cardinals weren't even out of the early part of practice when offensive lineman Keith Ismael and rookie defensive lineman Myles Murphy locked up in one-on-one drills and stayed locked, scuffling briefly with teammates coming in until coach Jonathan Gannon arrived and loudly banished both to the locker room for the remainder of practice.
Gannon doesn't tolerate fighting anyway, but the Cardinals are about to practice against the Colts next week, and the league is watching -- multiple fights between the Lions and Giants earlier this week earned $200,000 in fines for those teams.
Mostly, though, there is no upside -- players can get hurt, and if it happens in a game, penalties can be detrimental.
Kyler Murray didn't seem to be on the same page with some of his receivers on Wednesday. Interestingly, on the final sequence of practice, 11-on-11 work, the Cards used their first-unit skills players but a reserve offensive line consisting of Elijah Wilkinson, Isaiah Adams, Trystan Colon, Marquis Hayes, and Christian Jones.
Speaking of Hayes (and we all know Paul Calvisi likes to), he had a sequence in one-on-one where he totally locked up Darius Robinson and then Dante Stills. Both those players have performed well. Hayes is a name frequently unsaid but perhaps he makes a push.
Murray threw a near-interception in 7-on-7 to linebacker Kyzir White; however, in the first "drive" of 11-on-11 he was accurate and found Marvin Harrison Jr. deep down the middle for a score. Harrison was much too open, which will likely come up later in defensive meetings.
Haven't said much about Trey McBride, but rest assured he looks very good.
Cornerbacks Garrett Williams and Max Melton remained out of practice (likely why the team signed Delonte Hood this week), as did defensive lineman Justin Jones. Running back Emari Demercado also left practice with an athletic trainer.
With Williams and Melton down, Kei'Trel Clark was getting some first-unit nickel reps for the first time in a while.
Starling Thomas V isn't relenting in his bid for quality playing time. He made an impressive play to break up a potential long TD pass from Murray to Michael Wilson.
Rookie Xavier Thomas was getting some situational first-unit edge reps. He could be a wild card in this position group.
The Cardinals will have two more open practices next week unless you are headed out to Indianapolis -- where they will meet up with the Colts. The Colts' sessions will feature two night practices on Wednesday and Thursday leading into a Saturday night preseason game.
Field Yates reported that the Cardinals worked out veteran edge rusher Carl Lawson on Wednesday. If any roster additions are made by the Cardinals, they would need to make corresponding cuts since they are currently at their limit.
