Kyler Murray will not participate in any preseason games, as confirmed by Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon on Tuesday. The decision means the franchise quarterback will miss the upcoming preseason opener against the Saints at State Farm Stadium.
"I like where he's at right now," Gannon stated. "I like how the offense is operating, and I think he will get done everything that he needs to get done to be the best version of himself on opening day."
Gannon mentioned that playing time decisions vary based on factors such as age, health, and competition status. Regarding first-round pick Marvin Harrison Jr., Gannon has made a decision about his participation but did not disclose it publicly.
Many NFL stars are often sidelined during the preseason. While Murray expressed his desire to play, he understood Gannon's decision.
Gannon noted that Murray and the Cardinals have numerous practices ahead before their season opener in Buffalo, including joint sessions with the Indianapolis Colts next week. These practices will provide a valuable test for Murray and the Cardinals' offense.
Following their sessions with the Colts, who made last season's playoffs, the Cardinals will conclude their preseason with a game in Denver.
Desmond Ridder is currently listed as the backup quarterback on the initial depth chart, with Clayton Tune as third string. Both players are expected to receive significant playing time during the preseason while Murray is benched.
"It's a very healthy (battle)," Gannon remarked. "Good competition between those two. They're both doing a good job."
