Kyzir White's season-ending injury last year significantly impacted the Arizona Cardinals, as it deprived the defense of an emotional leader. The loss was felt almost immediately after White made a notable play in the 2023 season.
During a game against the Washington Commanders, White delivered a substantial hit on quarterback Sam Howell near the sideline. The hit drew a penalty and criticism from the Washington crowd but earned respect from Cardinals fans and teammates who saw it as a statement for a team underestimated at the start of the season.
When asked if the play was intentional to make such a statement, White responded with a smile, "Nah man, it wasn't by design. I saw him; he was still in the field of play from my point of view. I wanted to slow him down from running so I wanted to hit him pretty good. My intention wasn't to hurt him or cheat or be dirty, nothing like that. I just wanted to set the tone a little bit."
White believes setting the tone is crucial for his role as a Mike linebacker. "You watch Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, and NaVorro Bowman and all those guys; they ain't just letting the quarterback run around," he said. "They're trying to knock their head off."
He added, "I want to be in that caliber of linebacker."
Alongside Budda Baker, White aims to lead a defense determined not to be seen as weak. Having played under Jonathan Gannon and Nick Rallis since 2022 with the Eagles, White feels prepared for his third year in their system.
"If White can become a pseudo-Bowman or Willis, all the better," he noted. "I want to strive to be as good as those guys," White said. "I ain't close yet. I'll get there one day eventually. God willing."
