PHOENIX – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne has released figures showing that more than 900 Arizona schools have declined to answer five academic focus questions related to various educational matters.

Of the 2,467 district and charter schools in Arizona, 1,565 have affirmed their compliance with the guidelines, leaving 902 schools that have not responded. Horne expressed his concern, stating, "It is scandalous to see that more than 900 schools have declined to be transparent with parents who entrust their children to be educated by these schools."

Horne also addressed the issue of Critical Race Theory being taught in public schools, pointing out that some schools, like the Balsz Elementary District, openly promote it. He emphasized the importance of focusing on academics and avoiding divisive lessons, stating, "Every instructional minute is precious, and every minute should be devoted to academics, not unnecessary distractions."

Schools that choose not to respond to the inquiries will have that information included on their school report card provided on the department's website. Horne stressed the responsibility of schools to adhere to state standards and graduate academically proficient students, calling it "simple common sense."

The department has also requested information from districts regarding their compliance with state law on teaching about the Holocaust and other genocides, with details expected to be released next week.
