Applications are now being accepted by the Phoenix Youth and Education Office for the 2023 Outstanding Phoenix Youth Leader of the Year awards.
With applications being accepted through Feb. 24, ultimately two students from each city council district will be crowned as winners, with each earning a $500 prize, according to a Dec. 5 press release. Each district-level winner will also be eligible for an additional $1,500 prize if they are chosen as the citywide champion.
Youth and Education Office Director, Tim Valencia, said there is no overstating the value of such distinction.
“The Outstanding Phoenix Youth Leader Award has long lasting impacts,” Valencia said in the release. “Knowing that the money awarded to these amazing teens allows them to further their education and continue to make a difference is why this program is so essential to Phoenix youth."
Ameerah Battle, the 2017 overall district winner, who was awarded $2,000, agrees.
“The award helped me pay for my first year of college,” she said. “To me, this award meant a tremendous accomplishment. It showcased my dedication to my hometown/community through service and leadership. It allowed me to chase my dreams of graduating from Howard University, become a Fulbright Scholar, and pursue my master's in public health at Brown University. This award was a steppingstone to strive and continue for greatness. I am forever grateful.”
