Phoenix Parks and Recreation and city council member Ann O'Brien have partnered to create a new playground at Westown Park with two play spaces that offer childhood development benefits.

“It's a beautiful playground with a lime green color scheme, two play structures and two independent play spaces for kids of various age ranges," O'Brien said in a release from the city. “I appreciate everyone who worked to make this beautiful playground a reality for Phoenix families to enjoy."

The larger of the two play structures is designed for children ages 5-12 and features integrated shade as well as 20 other activities such as nets, slides and climbers, as well as activities which improve balance and flexibility, strategic thinking and promote physical development, according to the release.

The small structure, intended for children ages 2-3, offers 14 activities to promote hand-eye coordination, tactile, visual and auditory sensory skills, in addition to social and emotional skills. It also includes puzzles, a magnet stack, ladder rail disks and more.

Both structures will promote core body strength, coordination and provide children with better depth perception and balance, the release said.

“The new playground is much more than an entertaining space for Phoenix youth," Parks and Recreation Director Cynthia Aguilar explained. "It is space where children can develop a range of physical, mental and social benefits."
