House Speaker Pro Tempore Travis Grantham recently spoke on pivoting efforts to address the effects of COVID-19 in Arizona.
The state wasn’t hit horribly but “we were impacted,” Grantham said.
In general, the lawmakers would like to make sure that the “economy stays strong,” making sure that the “jobs market is good,” “schools are open and (there are) a lot of options out there for parents.”
He said the main concern is what COVID-19 has done to the economy.
Grantham said that both Republicans and Democrats are open to collaboration and are committed to Arizona’s recovery and progress.
“Everybody wants to work together on these things. It’s kind of refreshing quite honestly. I’ve been down here three terms, obviously seen some moments where there’s a huge partisan divide,” Grantham told Lorraine Rivera of Arizona 360. “I feel like there’s quite a bit of unity on these two items right now. One thing Republicans and Democrats can always agree on is that (the) economy matters, jobs matter, and education matters.”
In April of last year, Arizona recorded a week with the highest initial claims for unemployment insurance (132,428), and July posted a week with the highest initial claims for pandemic assistance (248,997) according to azeconomy.org
