The State of Arizona has begun turning the tide against unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On April 28, AZCentral reported unemployment claims had dropped for the third week in a row, including the biggest drop of more than a quarter in the most recent numbers released by the state. A total of 52,350 people filed for benefits the week ending April 25, down from 72,433 filings.
On the other side of the coin, more than 250,000 state residents are receiving unemployment benefits, the most in state history. There is an additional concern more will be added to the list even with the state beginning to reopen its economy, AZCentral reported.
Those receiving benefits are eligible to do so for 26 weeks in the state. That has been extended to 39 weeks under the CARES act, which is designed to provide relief from economic damage sustained in the coronavirus pandemic.
Nationally, claims have also begun to show a lower trajectory after a high of 6.6 million filing on the week ending April 4.
