OTTAWA UNIVERSITY-PHOENIX: Five Players Named to Inaugural All-GSAC Team; Carvalho Named Conference Coach of the Year

Ottawa University-Phoenix issued the following announcement on April 17

Five OUAZ players appeared on the inaugural Golden State Athletic Conference all-conference beach volleyball team, the conference announced Friday. Katia Dizon, Andrea Gonzalez, Viri Serrano, Mikelle Taylor and Val Rodgers were given the honor, as they all were key contributors to the 12-1 record OUAZ carried before the abrupt end of the season.

Dizon was in a dominant pair with Abbey Willison, as the two dropped only one of their 13 matches. Taylor and Rodgers were also fantastic, as they clinched four wins for OUAZ, including the tie-breaking point against NCAA Division I Oregon.

Gonzalez and Serrano played exceptionally well together as they pieced together great performances in all 13 of the Spirit's duals. The two did not start together, as they played in different pairs for three of the first four duals. But, they were placed together full time starting against Oregon, and won seven matchups the rest of the way.

The conference also named Spirit head coach Haleigh Carvalho the Coach of the Year. Carvalho has found great success in the program's first two seasons, winning an AVCA national championship in 2019, and being the only undefeated team in conference play at the time of stoppage. The team also scored non-conference wins over NCAA Division I opponents Oregon, Santa Clara, Abilene Christian and UC Davis in 2020.
