The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved the continuation of an accelerated job training program in three rural communities. With a $500,000 grant from the Governor’s Office, the Workforce 2 You program will continue to serve Queen Creek, Wickenburg, and Gila Bend. The initiative targets youth, dislocated workers, veterans, and other specific groups.
“Arizona is an attractive place for a variety of industries to do business because of our low taxes, relatively low cost of living, streamlined regulations, and skilled workforce,” said Maricopa County Supervisor Mark Stewart from District 1. He emphasized that by investing in job training programs and extending access into rural areas like Queen Creek, they are enhancing the local talent pool and supporting economic growth across Maricopa County.
Following its initial success last year, the program's second year will see an expansion to eight classes with a total capacity for 96 participants. This reflects increased demand for accessible career training and job placement services in rural regions. Training will focus on high-demand sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing.
“The Board’s support of rural job training is more than education; it’s about creating opportunities for people who can’t easily access traditional workforce programs,” stated Supervisor Debbie Lesko from District 4. She highlighted that by removing barriers like costs and distance, the program would aid residents in Wickenburg and other rural communities in connecting with essential resources.
Typically costing $20,000 per participant for accelerated training programs, Workforce 2 You offers its services at no charge. Participants also receive transportation assistance along with necessary supplies and tools.
“No matter what part of town they live in, Maricopa County residents deserve the opportunity to benefit from high-quality career training and job opportunities,” remarked Supervisor Steve Gallardo from District 5. He noted that this program brings crucial resources such as English as a Second Language (ESL) programs to places like Gila Bend where nearly 75% of the population is Hispanic or Latino.
In fiscal year 2024 alone, Human Services Department Workforce Development Career Centers were visited nearly 20,000 times with over 3,255 residents enrolling in personalized services to receive direct support or funding for training in high-demand fields.
