State Representative Matt Gress, who chairs the House Education Committee, has formally requested Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes to clarify the legality of a lease-leaseback agreement between Isaac Elementary School District and Tolleson Union High School District. Gress expressed concerns about potential legal and financial issues surrounding the deal.

"This agreement raises glaring legal and financial red flags," said Chairman Gress. He emphasized the need for clear answers from the Attorney General regarding the approval process and compliance with state law.

Gress's letter to Mayes highlights concerns over possible statutory violations and financial risks to taxpayers. He questioned whether a proper legal review was conducted before the agreement proceeded. The letter also raised issues about potential conflicts of interest and improper financial burdens on taxpayers.

Chairman Gress has requested public records related to the agreement and asked Attorney General Mayes to disclose details about her office's involvement, including which statutes were considered, who reviewed the agreement, and whether safeguards were in place to prevent conflicts of interest. "The House Education Committee is conducting a full review of this agreement," he added, stressing that transparency is essential for taxpayers and stability for students.

Attorney General Mayes has been asked to respond by February 17, 2025.

Matt Gress serves as a Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives for Legislative District 4 in Phoenix. He is also Chairman of the House Committee on Education.
