Sports Illustrated has compiled a list of the 50 greatest NFL games of the Super Bowl era, which began in 1966. The Cardinals have one game included in this ranking. The selection mainly consists of postseason games and Super Bowls, with a few regular season games.
The top three games listed are as follows:
1. The Ice Bowl in 1967, where Bart Starr's quarterback sneak led the Packers to victory over the Cowboys, securing the NFL title in Green Bay and advancing them to Super Bowl II against the AFL's Oakland Raiders.
2. The Immaculate Reception game in 1972, featuring Franco Harris' miraculous touchdown catch for the Steelers against the Raiders in Pittsburgh during the divisional round.
3. Super Bowl III, where Joe Namath famously guaranteed an upset as the AFL's Jets defeated the NFL's Colts.
For Cardinals fans, notable playoff games against the Packers did not make it onto this list. These include a thrilling 51-45 Wild Card victory during the 2009 season and a dramatic win in the Divisional round of 2015. However, their appearance in Super Bowl 43 was included.
Reflecting on this particular game, long-time NFL executive Joe Browne shared his thoughts: "Call me an NFL idealist, but I believe all longtime NFL owners and their fans should experience the joy of at least one Super Bowl win," he said. "This was Cards' owner Bill Bidwill's chance. However, two minutes is a football lifetime."
