Grand Canyon University athletes Germain Lemaitre and Taryn Burkett have been recognized with Western Athletic Conference (WAC) honors. Lemaitre, a junior, was named WAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Burkett, a senior, received the title of WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

Both athletes achieved new program records during their performances at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque over the weekend. Lemaitre set a new record in the 800-meter race with a time of 1 minute, 49.52 seconds, surpassing his previous school record of 1:49.76 from last year’s event. The altitude-adjusted time for his latest achievement is 1:48.91.

Burkett excelled in the triple jump, achieving a distance of 13.0 meters and breaking her former school record of 12.65 meters set in 2022 at the Washington State Invitational.

Lemaitre's performance contributed to Grand Canyon University's men's team ranking as No. 4 in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Region Rankings released on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, GCU will divide its squad for upcoming competitions next weekend. The Ron Mann Classic will take place in Flagstaff on Friday, while the New Mexico Team Open is scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque.
