In response to the worsening wildfires in Southern California, the Los Angeles Rams were unable to host their home playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings at SoFi Stadium. Michael Bidwill, owner of the Arizona Cardinals, received a call from Dawn Aponte, NFL's chief administrative officer of football operations, regarding this contingency.

Bidwill had previously agreed to make State Farm Stadium available for such situations. As Commissioner Roger Goodell noted, "That was determined long before the fires broke out – before the season." The Cardinals began preparations a day before it was announced that the game could be moved to Arizona and two days before it was officially relocated. The Rams secured a 27-9 victory over the Vikings six days after Bidwill's initial call.

Goodell emphasized preparation as key: "The most important thing is where you end it, which is incredibly well," he said. "Those contingency plans are in place to make sure we are prepared if we do have to make that call."

Another stadium was considered but not named by Goodell. However, due to proximity—less than 400 miles—the decision favored State Farm Stadium.

This is not new territory for the Cardinals. They have hosted teams in need before due to similar circumstances like wildfires or Covid restrictions affecting other teams' venues.

Monday's playoff game marked only the second time an NFL postseason game wasn't played at a team's home stadium—aside from Super Bowls—the first being in 1936 when poor ticket sales prompted relocation.

Attendance reached 64,515 despite late changes. Beyond providing a venue, the Cardinals extended hospitality with practice facilities and transportation arrangements for Rams personnel and families. Activities were arranged for children traveling with them and healthcare provisions made available as needed.

"Our organization is viewed as a go-to, reliable organization," Bidwill stated while crediting his team for their efforts. He confirmed State Farm Stadium remains an option for future contingencies this postseason.

Goodell praised Bidwill’s commitment: "I think he finds this an opportunity to show how wonderful the stadium is." Reflecting on Arizona’s community spirit and willingness to assist others during challenging times resonated deeply with Bidwill: "It's great to be able to help them out."
