Back when James Conner was with the Steelers, he had a pivotal conversation with defensive lineman Cam Heyward after Heyward signed a substantial contract extension. Conner inquired about how it felt to secure such a deal. Heyward's response was straightforward: "I've got to show them I'm worth it."

This interaction influenced Conner's mindset significantly. Speaking on Wednesday about his recent two-year contract extension with the Cardinals, which secures him through 2026, Conner shared, "Just because they give you the money, there is still this huge challenge ahead." He emphasized the importance of leadership and accountability.

Conner has become an integral part of the Cardinals' offense, achieving 773 rushing yards and five touchdowns while aiming for a second consecutive 1,000-yard season. Additionally, he has accumulated 301 yards from 32 receptions. This new contract marks his second extension with the team since joining as a free agent in 2021 after leaving Pittsburgh.

Reflecting on his career trajectory, Conner said, "I go by the term, 'It's already written.'" He expressed gratitude for the opportunity Arizona provided him and acknowledged that he always felt prepared for whatever came his way in his NFL journey.

The new contract adjusts Conner's salary cap number this season but reduces it to $6.5 million in 2025. It includes various bonuses and guarantees over $10 million initially, with potential additional guarantees and value up to $19 million.

As Conner approaches age 30 next May—a time when running backs often face challenges securing long-term contracts—he appreciates the Cardinals' continued faith in him. "That's why they brought me back and that's why I'm going to keep working," he stated.

Coach Jonathan Gannon expressed joy upon learning of Conner's extended stay with the team. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing praised Conner's performance and leadership qualities: "As a player, the effort he runs with...we don't play him a ton in all downs, but he's really good in pass protection."

Conner remains focused on maintaining his performance level: "You have to earn it," he said. "You are always being evaluated."

In other team news, offensive lineman Jackson Barton returned from Practice Squad Injured Reserve following a toe injury sustained on September 25th. To accommodate Barton’s return, linebacker Ronnie Perkins was released from the practice squad.
