As the holiday season approaches, the Phoenix Fire Department is gearing up to ensure the safety of the community. Phoenix firefighters, in collaboration with the Fire Prevention section, have joined forces with the Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health, Southwest Gas, and the Arizona Burn Foundation to share essential Thanksgiving safety tips. The initiative aims to educate the public on the do's and don'ts of various holiday activities. The event has a special focus on the safe preparation of one holiday favorite – the deep-fried turkey.

“Somebody’s life can be changed in a matter of seconds,” said Tiffany Hockenberry who is a Burn Nurse Specialist. “I don’t just mean for the next weeks or the next couple of months. This is a life-long injury that can happen.”

By partnering with organizations dedicated to burn injury prevention, the Phoenix Fire Department is committed to fostering a safer and more informed community during the festive season.

“Make sure you’re using the manufacturer’s instructions when you’re using your turkey frier,” said Cindy Staub, Deputy Fire Marshal. “Don’t fill it too full, make sure that your turkey is completely thawed, and make sure you stay safe this holiday season.”

Through engaging demonstrations, holiday safety tips, and discussions on burn injury prevention, the Phoenix Fire Department seeks to empower residents with the knowledge needed to enjoy a Thanksgiving celebration without compromising on safety. Because of Phoenix Fire’s longstanding partnership with the Arizona Burn Foundation, demonstrations like this help showcase crucial resources available to the community. The Arizona Burn Foundation (ABF) is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and assistance to burn survivors and their families.

As the community gathers to express gratitude and share in the joy of the season, these efforts underscore the commitment of local authorities and organizations to prioritize the well-being of every resident.
