Arizona State Representative Matt Gress is calling on Governor Katie Hobbs to allow extended serving hours for bars during the upcoming World Series game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers. In a formal letter written on Wednesday, Gress emphasized the importance of striking a balance between celebration and responsibility.

"We can strike a balance between celebration and responsibility," Gress stated. "With input from our dedicated public safety community, we can make this World Series a memorable and safe event for everyone involved."

“Arizona is a state of champions, and the Diamondbacks’ journey to the World Series exemplifies that spirit,” said Gress, according to a press release from the Arizona House of Representatives. “By extending service hours, we’re giving fans an extra hour to celebrate and support our local businesses. Let’s come together, have fun, and show the world why Arizona is the place to be.”

Arizona Revised Statute A.R.S. § 4-244(15)(b) allows Governor Hobbs to declare the extension, as it states that the Governor of Arizona may "issue an executive order that extends the closing time until 3:00 a.m. for spirituous liquor sales in connection with a professional or collegiate national sporting championship event held in this state". The extension would grant an additional hour for fans and bar-goers to enjoy their celebrations, according to Arizona State Legislature.

The first game of the 2023 World Series is scheduled for this Friday, marking the beginning of the series between the Diamondbacks and the Rangers. This achievement is the second time the Diamondbacks have reached the National League championship, with their previous victory in 2001 against the New York Yankees.

Matt Gress, a member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing District 4, has been an advocate for education and has a background as a public school teacher and a faculty associate at Arizona State University. He also has professional experience as a budget analyst at the Arizona State Capitol. Gress currently serves as the Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and is an active member of various other committees.

Gress's request for extended serving hours during the World Series aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment for fans while supporting local businesses. The decision ultimately lies with Governor Hobbs, who has the authority to issue an executive order for the extension.
