Arizona History is a palimpsest, a story layered over continuing preexisting stories — they are unrecognized stories that have been heavily erased and ignored. But Arizona’s Mexican heritage has been, and is, all around us. “Palimpsests of Arizona History” is a visual exhibition created and curated by Pete Dimas in collaboration with the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change. It aims to uncover this overwritten history dating back to the 16th Century and explore the ways in which Mexicans and Mexican Americans have deeply shaped the geography, food, work force, architecture, and culture of contemporary Arizona.
