As part of the Joy Bus Charity, Mayor Kate Gallego delivered 20,000 meals to homebound cancer patients on September 28, 2022. Jennifer Carraway, whose friend Joy was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, created The Joy Bus, which delivers homecooked meals to patients.

“When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you often have to stay at home and many people have really significant symptoms where they don’t feel well enough to get out,” said Gallego according to AZFamily.

“I’m honored to still be here after 10 years of doing this to our community. This is not a one-woman show, it really does take a village,” The Joy Bus creator, Jennifer Carraway, said. “I never imagined this ever, and I’m very, very grateful. It’s truly because of the volunteers that we’re here. I just had a little idea, and they took that idea and made it way cooler than I ever imagined.”

Gallego has been heavily involved in the program, which she has made a priority for her administration. According to AZFamily, Gallego said, “The entire city wants to say thank you to Joy Bus...You have stepped up to help patients fight cancer, even during COVID. Today is Joy Bus Day in the City of Phoenix.”

Gallego also tweeted about the event, saying, "My family has been deeply affected by cancer, so it was a special experience to help @TheJoyBusOrg deliver its 20,000th meal this morning! You can help the https://thejoybusdiner.com bring happiness and great food to people who need our help. #joybusdiner #joybusday"
