The Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival marked its 16th year with a celebration of cinema and community. The event took place over three days from January 24 to 26, focusing on the theme of family in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. The Desperado Foundation encouraged attendees "to explore stories that celebrate the diverse and lasting strength of family, connection, and belonging within the LGBTQ+ community."
The festival has consistently provided a platform for unique storytelling. In its 16th year, it aimed to present narratives that resonate with LGBTQ+ audiences and those interested in understanding their experiences. The lineup included stories about chosen families and explorations of identity and belonging.
Alan East, Festival Programmer at Desperado Foundation, expressed gratitude: “We are so grateful to our audience for helping us build a vibrant event here at Paradise Valley Community College.”
Supporters' generosity enables Desperado to offer accessible LGBTQ+ films and fund initiatives like scholarships and diversity events.
Madison Hamby from PVCC described her experience as "nothing short of magical," noting the diverse crowd's enthusiasm for LGBTQ+ storytelling. She highlighted live music, food, drinks, and free accessories that added fun to the event. Hamby appreciated the positive environment where attendees engaged openly.
“The sense of community was palpable," she said. "Desperado is more than the films; it’s about the connections made...and the collective recognition of the importance of family in all its forms."
Attendees could vote for their favorite film for the 2025 Audience Award, engaging them further in celebrating these works.
Donations through Desperado’s website support continued visibility and inclusion efforts.
As this year's festival concluded, it emphasized more than cinema—it was about gathering hearts, celebrating chosen family, and fostering conversations on connection and love.
