Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting veterans by securing first place in the food and hygiene drive portion of the annual MVET Challenge. This marks the third consecutive year that PVCC has achieved this honor, showcasing its dedication to veteran support within the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). While Phoenix College took home the overall championship by winning the membership drive, PVCC's efforts have been recognized for their impact on the veteran community.

"The MVET Challenge is an opportunity for PVCC to demonstrate its core values of compassion and service," stated PVCC President Dr. Jana Schwartz. "By supporting veterans’ basic needs, we’re not only giving back to those who have given so much to our country, but we’re also fostering a culture of empathy, dignity, and community care."

The MVET Challenge is a competition among Maricopa Community Colleges aimed at rallying support for veterans through food and hygiene drives as well as membership growth for veteran support programs. The initiative underscores Maricopa’s commitment to ensuring veterans' well-being and educational success.

Despite not winning overall this year, PVCC remains determined. Lance Miller, who led efforts at PVCC, expressed resolve: "We may not have won this year, but we are determined to win the Jolly Roger back next year." He highlighted that PVCC collected five pallets of food and hygiene products for military families. "As long as the spirit of the MVET Challenge continues, we will continue to do our part to help."

Christina Calderon from Veterans Affairs emphasized that "the MVET Challenge is more than a competition—it’s a testament to our college’s values." She noted that each item collected sends a message of care and support to veterans.

The MCCCD's MVET Challenge was founded in 2016 with a mission supported by the Military Support Foundation. This foundation has sent over 10,000 care packages overseas filled with essential items for servicemen and women.

PVCC's Veteran Services also hosts family days for servicemen, veterans, and their families. Gabrielle Begay, a student at PVCC, mentioned how crucial it is to offer support through food and hygiene items during cold holiday seasons.

Rob Stimson from Veterans Services remarked on MVET's importance: "MVET is an important part of the many wonderful opportunities and relief sources that help keep our student veterans and the community thriving." Sixto Rodriguez reflected on his Marine Corps experience stating that friendly competition like MVET builds cohesion and serves as a reminder that it's time for veterans to be served.
