District 1 | Chairman Jack Sellers | Maricopa County
Newly-elected Chairman Thomas Galvin has announced several initiatives aimed at enhancing prosperity and security in Maricopa County. As the first Latino Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Galvin is committed to a proactive approach during his tenure.
"We aim to be a board of action, and I aim to deliver a consequential chairmanship that will achieve substantial results," stated Galvin, who represents District 2. He highlighted plans for supporting law enforcement by ending federal oversight at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and improving compensation for deputies, detention officers, and dispatchers.
Galvin also intends to hire an economic development advocate for the county and introduce a budgetary 'performance measurement' system to reduce waste. "I'm committed to taking a hard look at county policies and regulations that stand in the way of building homes that people can afford," he said. Efforts will include modernizing zoning ordinances for greater density while preserving community integrity.
In addressing election administration, Galvin urged the Arizona Legislature to reform state election laws. "People want election results faster and when misinformation has more time to fester it breeds mistrust in our system," he explained. His "95:1 plan" aims for 95% of votes to be counted by election night’s end.
Additionally, Galvin announced an advisory panel focused on bringing NHL hockey back to the Valley.
Galvin was elected unanimously by his colleagues following their swearing-in ceremony. New supervisors Mark Stewart (District 1), Kate Brophy McGee (District 3), and Debbie Lesko (District 4) joined him on the board. Brophy McGee was appointed Vice Chair.
"This is a place where I believe I can make a difference on kitchen table, quality of life issues like cost of living, jobs, and public safety," commented Brophy McGee.
Stewart expressed commitment to transparency and collaboration with staff and community members: "Working together we can build a thriving environment where families and businesses succeed."
Lesko promised dedication similar to her previous roles as U.S. Congresswoman and Arizona State Legislator: "My priorities include public safety, election integrity, and ensuring your taxpayer dollars are used wisely."
Returning member Steve Gallardo from District 5 praised Galvin's leadership: "It's going to be a great year of seeing Chairman Galvin's leadership in action."
