In a move aimed at addressing homelessness in Maricopa County, the Board of Supervisors has allocated $7.5 million to the City of Phoenix Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS). This funding is intended to provide emergency shelter, temporary transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing for those experiencing homelessness.

"Homelessness affects individuals across all ages and backgrounds, and addressing this issue is more than providing shelter; it’s about offering safety, dignity, and a path forward for every individual in Maricopa County," said Jack Sellers, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors from District 1. He emphasized the importance of safe housing and emergency services for seniors who face unique challenges.

The collaboration with Phoenix OHS will allocate $6 million to Senior Bridge to assist seniors aged 55 or older with incomes between zero and 30 percent Area Median Income (AMI). This funding will support the development and operation of temporary transitional housing and permanent supportive housing. The site will feature 40 non-congregate shelter/transitional housing units equipped with bathrooms and 65 affordable apartments that include bathrooms and kitchenettes. Additionally, funds will ensure ADA accessibility for these units.

Furthermore, $1.5 million will be directed towards Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) to offer continuous emergency shelter and essential services throughout the year. This funding guarantees that clients who used the emergency shelter or had an assigned bed overnight can access the facility again the next day.

"Investing in housing and shelter for those experiencing homelessness, especially our seniors, is a compassionate investment in the stability and quality of life of our community members," stated Supervisor Steve Gallardo from District 5. He stressed that everyone deserves secure and affordable living conditions in Maricopa County.

With increasing numbers facing homelessness, this funding aims to deliver crucial resources to vulnerable groups while Maricopa County continues working with local partners on sustainable solutions. The initiative forms part of Maricopa County's ongoing efforts to tackle homelessness and enhance life quality for those most in need.
