The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved $500,000 for the renovation of the playground at Kiwanis Park in New River. The park, which spans 80 acres and is managed by the Kiwanis Club, will see construction begin in March with an expected completion date of May 2025.
Supervisor Bill Gates from District 3 commented on the decision: "Over the last several years, the New River community has grown so much and attracted many families with young kids." He added that since New River lacks traditionally funded parks due to its status as a non-incorporated municipality, Kiwanis Park serves as a central gathering spot for various community events. Gates expressed enthusiasm about upgrading the playground to provide a safer and more enjoyable environment for families.
The renovation plans were shaped by input from local residents and members of the Kiwanis Club. Features will include a new play structure made from recycled materials, activities suitable for all ages and abilities, such as slides, monkey bars, balancing features, a river rock climber, puzzles, a communication board, a sensory wave wall, a large climbing net, and an adult fitness area. Additionally, there will be shaded areas with tables and seating and a concrete sidewalk providing full access around the play space.
Charlie Fisher, President of New River Kiwanis Park shared his gratitude: "I grew up in this community...and have always been so proud of how hard local volunteers and families have worked to bootstrap this park's development." He acknowledged Maricopa County's support in facilitating improvements that would have been challenging without their assistance.
In addition to funding for Kiwanis Park renovations during the same meeting Supervisor Gates allocated funds for other projects. These include $110,000 to renovate facilities used by U.S. VETS in Phoenix; $49,985 to Solari for heat relief initiatives; $10,000 each to Steered Straight for youth substance abuse prevention programs; and National High School Mock Trial competitions.
Maricopa County provides Community Solutions Funding annually to supervisors to advance strategic goals and deliver public benefits. More information on these projects can be found on the Maricopa County News page.
