James Conner, a key player for the Arizona Cardinals, has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his place on the team through the 2026 season. The veteran running back was initially set to become a free agent after this season.
Conner, who will turn 30 in May, is aware of the challenges that come with age for NFL running backs. However, he emphasizes his improved ability to maintain his physical health and has participated in every game this season. His performance significantly impacts the team's success; they hold a 5-1 record when Conner achieves over 100 scrimmage yards and are 1-4 when he does not.
This season, Conner has accumulated 705 rushing yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also recorded 29 receptions for 288 yards. Despite a challenging game against Seattle last week, he has managed to achieve 993 scrimmage yards overall. According to Next Gen Stats, Conner shares the lead with Baltimore's Derrick Henry for most missed tackles forced at 71.
The decision to extend Conner's contract may be one of several moves by General Manager Monti Ossenfort as other key players approach free agency. The Cardinals have sufficient salary cap space to secure several contracts before free agency starts in March if Ossenfort decides to do so.
The team travels to Minnesota on Saturday for an important match against the Vikings scheduled for Sunday.
