Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), in collaboration with the Phoenix Police Department, is offering an opportunity for students and community members to delve into cold case investigations. Beginning September 16, 2024, the new course—Special Topics in the Administration of Justice—will allow participants to apply their curiosity and social media skills to real-life unsolved cases.

Cold cases require both patience and fresh perspectives. This 3-credit course is open to anyone interested in solving cold cases and gaining hands-on investigative experience, with no prior experience or prerequisites necessary.

“We are grateful to the Phoenix Police Department for providing us with material, allowing students and community members to lend their eyes and minds to these unsolved cases,” said Bootsie Martínez, PVCC’s Administration of Justice Studies Program Director. “Some families have been waiting for years to find out what happened to their loved ones, and we’re honored to continue the pursuit of justice while giving students hands-on experience in crime-solving.”

Leading the course is Lt. John Humphrey, a retired Phoenix Police Department officer with 33 years of experience. Lt. Humphrey understands the value of new perspectives on long-standing investigations.

“Today’s students are digital natives who know how to use social media and online resources for research,” he said. “As the professor, I can guide the students, but they’re the ones who will know where to look for new leads in the digital space.”

This course meets twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 AM to 12:10 PM. It offers not just investigative work but also a chance for students to explore careers in law enforcement or related fields. The real-world experience could inspire students to pursue careers within law enforcement as sworn officers or in various professional roles.
