Aaron Brewer remains with the Arizona Cardinals.

Despite the team exploring potential replacements for the veteran long snapper over recent years, Brewer continues to hold his position. Joe Shimko was the most recent contender, but the Cardinals released Shimko on Tuesday. Earlier in the offseason, Brewer humorously noted his surprise at still being part of the NFL. With a 17-man practice squad, it is possible Shimko could return in the future.

Brewer's retention is not unexpected. He shares a close friendship with kicker Matt Prater, which contributes to his continued presence on the team. More importantly, Brewer has worked with special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers for over a decade.

The role of a long snapper often goes unnoticed until something goes wrong. Teams tend to stick with a reliable player until they are no longer physically capable of performing. Over 25 years of covering this team, changes in long snappers have been rare for this reason.

As Brewer enters his ninth season with the Cardinals, he remains an understated yet essential part of the team.

The Cardinals must reduce their roster to 53 players within a week. Currently, they have 91 players on their roster, including an international exemption for tight end Bernhard Seikovits.
