Instructional assistants, formerly known as paraeducators, play a crucial role in supporting special education students and ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed. The recent name change aims to better reflect their contributions.

Instructional assistants provide individual attention and support by working one-on-one with students or in small groups. They also help prepare instructional materials and assist classroom teachers during lessons. Additionally, they communicate with families and other school community members to ensure cohesive support for student success.

PVSchools updated the position title to recognize these professionals' contributions and improve recruitment efforts. The district found that potential applicants often misunderstood the role due to its previous title. In a competitive job market, PVSchools faces challenges in finding qualified candidates, similar to many school districts across Arizona. The new title aims to clarify the role and attract more talent.

To streamline hiring, the PVSchools Human Resources Department established a centralized recruitment process for special education support staff positions. This process allows qualified instructional assistant applicants to be hired more efficiently.

Interested individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent are encouraged to apply for instructional assistant positions. A background check and valid Fingerprint Clearance Card are required. PVSchools offers CPR and First Aid training on the job.

Higher-paying positions are available for highly qualified candidates who meet additional criteria such as 60 postsecondary hours of college coursework, an AA degree, or passing the ParaPro Assessment.
