The Phoenix Union High School District governing board approved raising the minimum wage to $16 for employees, with the annual starting salary for teachers increasing to $52,000.

“It’s going to be huge and it's life-changing dollars for my colleagues,” Corresponding Secretary for the Classified Employees Association Vanessa Jimenez told ABC15.

ABC15 reports that the raise came after three rounds of negotiations, with the first amounting to $12.80 an hour, followed by $14. In addition to teachers, the increase will benefit numerous other employees, including administrators, bus drivers, counselors and custodians.

“Part of the process is we all come to the table and support each other,” Jimenez told ABC15.

Board Member Aaron Marquez hopes additional negotiations in the near future will get the minimum annual wage to $20, according to ABC15.

Stephanie Parra, another board member, is glad about the progress that has been made so far.

“I’m so proud that we've hit this milestone setting the bar for the rest of the state,” Parra told ABC15.
