he Class of 2022 will be quite large in comparison to the first body of students to graduate from Phoenix College (PC) in 1922. 3811 degrees and certificates will be conferred at two ceremonies, both starting at 7:30 pm, on Thurs, May 12 and Fri, May 13, at PC’s Hoy Field, located at 1202 West Thomas Road.
Phoenix Junior College, as it was known in 1920, began with a class of eighteen students. Two years later, on May 26, 1922, four men and one woman graduated from the new college. The next year, twelve men and seven women crossed the stage, while enrollment surpassed eighty students.
Phoenix College (PC) will celebrate its 100th graduating class in May when Commencement returns to campus for the milestone ceremonies. The Class of 2022 will be quite a bit larger than PC’s first graduating class of five students in 1922. 3,811 degrees and certificates will be conferred at two ceremonies on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13, 7:30 p.m. at PC’s Hoy Field, located at 1202 West Thomas Road. Students in the class of 2022 have overcome incredible obstacles to achieve their academic goals, including transitioning from in-person instruction to remote learning, during a global pandemic.

JESSICA McDONALD
Celebrating with the graduates of 2022 will be two alumni keynote speakers Jessica McDonald, class of 2009, and Zachary Hall, class of 2007, as well Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Interim Chancellor Dr. Steven Gonzalez, MCCCD Governing Board secretary Dr. Tom Nerini, Interim College President Dr. Clyne Namuo, other College executive leaders, faculty, staff, and families of the graduates.
ZACHARY HALL
Keynote speaker Zachary Hall is President of State Forty-Eight Foundation, a member of the Grand Canyon University Honors College advisory committee, and is Director of Business Development at AvAir. He is also the author of “Don’t Sleep on Planes”, a book about the power of connections, with insights for graduates about growing their circle of influence, and personal networks.
Keynote speaker Jessica McDonald is a professional soccer player with Racing Louisville, in Kentucky. In 2019, McDonald was named to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), and helped the U.S. win the Women’s World Cup Championship in France. She was featured in the HBO Documentary film, LFG, about the struggle of the USWNT players to earn equal play to their male counterparts. McDonald is deeply committed to lifting young athletes and advocating for equality.
Also addressing PC graduates will be student speakers Robert Ritchey (May 12) and Rachel Arvizu (May 13).
Phoenix College alumni are making their mark on the world in countless ways, and PC looks forward to celebrating and following the success of the 100th graduating class.
A Gift to the Class of 2022
Participating graduates will receive a commemorative tassel and the History of Phoenix College Coffee Table Book, which is a vivid account of the College’s 100-year history.
