No new teachers in Phoenix sign pledge on Oct. 29 to teach Critical Race Theory

Highschoolclassroom1401

There were no new teachers in Phoenix who signed the pledge on Oct. 29, according to an online pledge from the Zinn Education Project.

The pledge was signed by no teachers on Oct. 28, the day before. It now has 38 pledges from Phoenix teachers.

They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.

Comments from Phoenix teachers included, "All people no matter their but especially children deserve to know our history and they deserve the opportunity to discuss what they hear and learn also. You can not outlaw history that already has been lived by so many" and "Give the educators the ability to teach truth. To teach history from multiple perspectives. The ability for students to see both sides of the discussion and form their own opinion is imperative to critical thinking".

Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.

Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.

Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.

In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon', Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

Lauren GastonMy students deserve to know and understand American history, the FULL, COMPLETE history. They cannot be informed citizens who use critical thinking if they do not know their country's accurate history. Many students are represented through the different events and people of the past, and deserve to be represented in class.
