Will Johnson, a second-round draft pick for the Arizona Cardinals, recently shared his perspective on joining the team in an article published by The Players Tribune. Johnson, who had expected to be chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft, described his initial disappointment at falling to the second round. However, he wrote that being selected by the Cardinals brought him immediate joy.
“That’s when I realized that I’m going back to the place where I had spent the last few months working towards this moment — a place I love,” Johnson wrote. “Before the Draft, I was working out in Arizona, telling everyone how AZ had become one of my favorite places. And now, I’ve been drafted there.”
As teams across the NFL prepare to reduce their rosters to 53 players ahead of the regular season, Johnson’s role with the Cardinals appears secure. He is expected to be among the top three cornerbacks on the team and receive significant playing time.
Johnson addressed concerns about his knee injury, which some believe contributed to his draft slide. He explained that more than two years ago he underwent cartilage removal from his knee but has experienced “ZERO problems” since then. Johnson also clarified that turf toe affected part of his final college season at Michigan and a hamstring issue limited him during recent offseason activities.
The narrative surrounding his knee remains a source of frustration for Johnson. In closing his article, he expressed confidence in both himself and his new team.
“But at the end of the piece comes perhaps the most important part of Johnson’s message, when he said ‘the Cardinals are building something special with their coaches, culture and players.'”
He concluded: “My mission is clear.
Prove everyone wrong.
Prove myself right.
