The University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies has released a new white paper titled “Emotional Intelligence as a Foundation for Organizational Wellness.” Authored by Chanell Russell, a research fellow at the Center for Organizational Wellness, Engagement and Belonging (CO-WEB), the paper addresses the role of emotional intelligence in education and leadership within modern organizations.
Russell’s work brings together research from organizational psychology, leadership studies, and health administration. The white paper looks at how emotionally intelligent behaviors—including self-awareness, empathy, and relational decision-making—can help create healthier workplace cultures. Russell points out that achieving organizational wellness is not just an individual task but also depends on leadership practices, policies, and daily routines.
“Emotional intelligence is not a ‘soft skill’ — it is a structural leadership capability that influences trust, psychological safety and long-term organizational effectiveness,” said Russell. “When leaders are equipped to recognize emotional dynamics and respond intentionally, they can reduce preventable strain and create conditions where people are more engaged, resilient and able to perform at their best.”
The white paper discusses how emotionally intelligent leadership can support wellness across various sectors. It is especially relevant for healthcare, human services, and mission-driven organizations. The document aims to connect theory with practical application for scholars, practitioners, and leaders who seek to improve policy design and organizational strategy.
Chanell Russell has experience in psychiatric care, applied behavior analysis therapy, and foster care case management. As a Fellow in Residence with CO-WEB at the University of Phoenix, her research focuses on organizational wellness strategies that promote engagement while minimizing preventable strain. She holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from the University of Phoenix and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Health Administration.
The full white paper can be accessed through the University of Phoenix Research Hub.
