The University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies has published a white paper titled “Reinventing Productivity: Aligning AI Innovation with Human Potential in the Modern Workforce.” The report, authored by Jessica Sylvester, Ed.D., MBA, examines why increased investment in artificial intelligence (AI) has not consistently led to higher productivity and suggests leadership practices that emphasize worker autonomy, well-being, and equal access to skill development.

The analysis draws on findings from the University of Phoenix Career Optimism Index study and related research. Key points include ongoing employee burnout affecting 51% of U.S. workers, limited availability of employer-provided AI training—offered by only 34% of organizations—and better experiences among employees who use AI tools. These employees are reported to be 2.5 times more likely to feel autonomous at work and also experience greater career control and less burnout.

Jessica Sylvester stated, “The conversation about AI can’t begin and end with tools; it must start with people. When organizations adopt AI with transparency, build AI literacy, and redesign roles for flexibility, the technology augments human capability rather than eroding it. That is how we close the gap between innovation and impact.”

The white paper presents recommendations for employers and policymakers such as integrating ethics into AI training programs, encouraging psychological safety in workplaces, focusing on internal mobility opportunities, and designing roles that promote flexibility and well-being. According to the paper, these measures can help organizations achieve productivity improvements while supporting positive workforce outcomes.

Sylvester brings over 18 years of experience as a higher-education leader and serves as an associate faculty member across several colleges at University of Phoenix. She holds advanced degrees from University of Phoenix as well as a Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University.

The complete white paper can be accessed through the University of Phoenix Career Institute webpage or via its Research Hub.
