University of Phoenix publishes study on AI storytelling for adult science learners

The University of Phoenix announced on Mar. 11 the publication of a peer-reviewed study examining how artificial intelligence and character-driven storytelling can help adult learners understand complex environmental science concepts.

The study, titled “Harnessing AI, Virtual Landscapes, and Anthropomorphic Imaginaries to Enhance Environmental Science Education at Jökulsárlón Proglacial Lagoon, Iceland,” appears in Glacies and was authored by Jacquelyn Kelly, Ph.D., Dianna Gielstra, Ph.D., Tomáš J. Oberding, Ph.D., Jim Bruno, MBA, and Stephanie Cosentino, MAEd. The research explores the use of storybook formats and human-centered AI tools in the ENV/100T course to make scientific ideas more accessible for non-science majors and adults returning to education after time away.

In the course, students encounter characters such as Nico Nitrogen and Waverly Water that personify scientific processes. Faculty and instructional designers used generative AI to create consistent imagery for these characters and enhance narrative clarity. This approach aimed to provide entry points into complex topics while aligning with learning outcomes.

Survey results from the study show that 87.1 percent of students enjoyed engaging with narrative elements, while 82 percent agreed that this method reinforced systems thinking. Student feedback indicated that stories and visuals helped them compare ideas and communicate scientific concepts effectively. Dr. Kelly said, “Adult learners benefit when we make space for curiosity and play as part of serious learning… By inviting students to meet characters like Nico Nitrogen and Waverly Water, we help them see the patterns and relationships that exist in environmental systems.”

The authors suggest their model offers practical strategies for courses serving working adults or non-science majors: using narratives to make abstract concepts approachable, supporting those stories with consistent visuals created through AI tools, and aligning activities with clear learning goals.
