President Chris Lynne of University of Phoenix has been named a 2026 Arizona Business Leader by AZ Big Media. He is featured in an annual magazine published by the media company, which highlights influential executives and entrepreneurs across key industries in Arizona.
Lynne leads University of Phoenix from its headquarters in Phoenix. The university is one of the largest online education providers in the United States, with a focus on accessible and career-aligned learning for working adults. In 2026, the institution will mark its 50th anniversary serving adult learners and advancing innovation in higher education.
“Arizona’s economy is evolving quickly, and institutions like University of Phoenix have a responsibility to move just as fast,” said Lynne. “Over the past several years, we’ve been very intentional about innovating for working adult learners and employer talent needs. For me, this recognition underscores that you can be both rigorously data-driven and deeply focused on people — creating practical pathways for working adults’ careers while helping employers build a more resilient, skilled workforce.”
Since joining University of Phoenix as chief financial officer in 2018, Lynne has played a significant role in guiding the university through strategic changes. He became president in 2022 and led its transition to a public company in 2025. He also serves as CEO of its parent company, Phoenix Education Partners, Inc., while remaining president and trustee at University of Phoenix.
Lynne was part of the leadership team that began transforming the university’s strategy around student outcomes and career preparation starting in 2017. Initiatives included streamlining academic programs, aligning all curriculum with career-relevant skills, strengthening student support services, investing in technology platforms prepared for artificial intelligence integration, and implementing cost efficiencies. These efforts have resulted in double-digit improvements in student retention and graduation rates.
As someone who was first in his immediate family to attend college, Lynne has focused his career on expanding opportunities for nontraditional students from underserved backgrounds to achieve social mobility through education. Earlier this year, AZ Big Media also recognized him among the 50 Most Powerful People in Arizona Business for his work promoting workforce-aligned learning and accessibility.
