The Arizona Cardinals announced on Mar. 12 that running back Tyler Allgeier has joined the team following the opening of the legal tampering window in free agency. The move comes shortly after news of James Conner’s restructured contract and positions Allgeier as a key addition to the Cardinals’ roster.

Allgeier said during his introductory press conference, “I felt like it was going to be really good. They showed a lot of interest. Shoot, they believe in me, so I believe in them.” His arrival is significant for the Cardinals, who are looking to strengthen their running game after injuries sidelined both Conner and Trey Benson last season.

Allgeier began his career with the Atlanta Falcons, rushing for over 1,000 yards as a rookie in 2022 before sharing duties with Bijan Robinson. He finished the 2025 season with a personal best of eight touchdowns. With Conner and Benson recovering from injuries, Allgeier is expected to compete for starting responsibilities but emphasized teamwork: “They haven’t really discussed that, but more importantly, just to win is the main thing. Being able to compliment each other, however the rotation is going to go, and being able to do what we can to help this team win.”

Known for his physical style of play, Allgeier has forced missed tackles on over 30 percent of his rushes since entering the league—a statistic surpassed only by Pittsburgh’s Jaylen Warren—according to Next Gen Stats. The Cardinals are also making changes on offense under coordinator Mike LaFleur and have added depth at running back and offensive line positions.

“How much success they had with the Rams and being able to bring it here, I think he’s going to be really successful,” Allgeier said about LaFleur’s system. “They are bringing in all of the pieces to make it really good. A lot of excitement for this team and for this offense.” The team recently signed Bam Knight on a one-year deal and added three offensive linemen: Isaac Seumalo, Elijah Wilkinson, and Matt Pryor.

The Arizona Cardinals are recognized as a professional football team in the NFC West division according to their official website. They host home games in Glendale and serve the greater Phoenix area according to their official website. The franchise stands as the oldest continuously operating professional football organization in the United States according to their official website and captured an NFC championship in 2008 according to their official website.

Reflecting on his new role with Arizona after transitioning from linebacker at BYU early in his career, Allgeier said: “I think it’s a great opportunity for me and great opportunity for the organization. I’m excited for it and just grateful to be trusted upon to be a part of this organization.” In related moves around the league, former Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray signed with Minnesota while running back Emari Demercado joined Kansas City.
