The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued an Ozone High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for Maricopa County, effective Wednesday, April 17. According to the ADEQ, ground-level ozone forms when volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and nitrous oxides (NOx) react in sunlight, with the highest levels typically occurring in the afternoon.

"People most affected by ozone include children, senior citizens, people who work or exercise outdoors, and people with pre-existing respiratory disease," said the ADEQ. The health effects of ozone exposure can include respiratory irritation, aggravation of asthma, and reduced immune system function. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, coughing, headaches, nausea, and throat and lung irritation.

In response to the High Pollution Advisory, certain restrictions have been put in place, such as prohibiting government entities from operating leaf blowers and restricting wood burning in residential fireplaces and outdoor fires. Employers and transportation coordinators are advised to activate their HPA plans, while the general public is encouraged to limit outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory issues.

To reduce ozone pollution and improve air quality, residents and businesses are urged to take certain actions, including driving as little as possible, using public transit, and avoiding long drive-thru lines. Additionally, using low-VOC paints and properly sealing containers of household chemicals are recommended.

The Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD), in collaboration with ADEQ and Valley Metro, provides resources and tips for reducing air pollution and promoting healthier air quality in the region.
