A week after announcing her run for Arizona's 3rd Congressional District seat, Senator Raquel Terán (D) resigned today from the Arizona State Senate.
“Effective immediately, I have resigned as state senator,” Terán said in a press release. “As I begin my next journey to support the people of Arizona, I extend my sincere thanks to the voters who trusted me, the staff who supported me, and colleagues who are fighting every day to make reality better in Arizona.”
The 3rd Congressional District is currently represented by Rep. Ruben Gallego (D), who is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Kristin Sinema (D). The district includes a portion of Glendale and downtown, west, and south Phoenix.
Terán was appointed in 2021 to represent District 30 in the Arizona State Senate following the resignation of Sen. Tony Navarette. The Arizona Republic reports Navarette resigned "amid criminal charges for child sexual abuse." Terán ran unopposed in the November 2022 election to retain her seat. She previously represented District 30 in the Arizona House of Representatives.
Terán was elected as chair of the Arizona Democratic Party on January 23, 2021, a post from which she also resigned in December 2022.
A native of Douglas, Arizona, Terán resides in Phoenix, Arizona.
