Steve Cortes, President of the League of American Workers, said that Democrats shut down the government to favor illegal immigrants in places like Phoenix. He called for Republicans to respond by cutting federal bureaucracy. This statement was made during an interview.

“Dems shut down the Govt to prioritize…ILLEGALS,” said Cortes. “Fine. Don’t threaten us with a good time! Now, counterpunch like Floyd Mayweather. Fire legions of federal bureaucrats.”

According to The Washington Post, the U.S. government entered a shutdown on October 1, 2025, after Congress failed to pass funding legislation by the midnight deadline. This situation placed non-essential federal activities on pause and furloughed many employees. The article notes that “up to 750,000 federal workers may be furloughed” and several agencies will suspend operations unless funding is restored. The shutdown stems from partisan deadlock over healthcare subsidies, foreign aid cuts, and overall spending levels. Mandatory programs like Social Security and Medicare continue, while discretionary and regulatory functions face interruptions.

PBS NewsHour reported that the Congressional Budget Office estimated up to 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed daily during a government shutdown, with those lost wages equaling roughly $400 million per day. The article explains that while workers are eventually guaranteed back pay under federal law, the interruption in paychecks still causes widespread financial strain for employees and local economies. It also stresses that prolonged uncertainty undermines consumer confidence and ripples through sectors that rely heavily on federal contracts and spending.

According to Federal News Network in September 2025, more than half of the federal workforce losses in recent months have come from just three agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Homeland Security. The article details that these agencies alone accounted for over 12,000 of the roughly 23,000 positions eliminated between September 2024 and March 2025 based on Office of Personnel Management data. The report highlights that such concentrated reductions could affect national security, veteran care, and border management.
