On Feb. 24, 2026, State Representative Walt Blackman will host a press conference at the Arizona State Capitol recognizing Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day and honoring Dr. Joseph Torkildson for more than 40 years of service as a pediatric oncologist at Banner Children’s at Desert.
The event aims to highlight the ongoing impact of pediatric cancer on families across Arizona, including long hospital stays, financial strain, and significant uncertainty. Organizers say the day is intended to raise awareness and encourage continued support for affected families and sustained attention to pediatric cancer care.
“As legislators, we fight for families, and few fights are tougher than watching your child face cancer,” Representative Walt Blackman said. “Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day is a public reminder that these kids and parents are not alone. We honor Dr. Joseph Torkildson because he showed up for decades when families needed someone steady, skilled, and relentless in their corner. We should match that same level of seriousness with awareness, support, and action that helps kids get the care they deserve,” according to Blackman.
The proclamation will be read by Aaliyah Jensen and Axel Alcantar during the press conference scheduled for 8:00 AM in the House Lawn at the State Capitol located at 1700 W. Washington St., Phoenix.
Blackman serves as Chairman of the House Government Committee and represents Legislative District 7 in the Arizona House of Representatives.Â
