Matt Gress, a state representative, expressed his support for the Arizona House Speaker’s decision to form an advisory team to investigate alleged connections between a wealthy donor and state government contracts. This announcement follows reports involving Governor Hobbs and was made on the social media platform X.

“After reading the extensive Republic investigation into Governor Hobbs’ relationship with a wealthy donor, who sought and received millions of dollars from state government before and after multiple $100K+ donations were made, I applaud Speaker Montenegro for convening this Advisory Team to review this matter further,” said Matthew Owen Gress, State House Representative.

According to a statement from the Arizona House GOP, Speaker Steve Montenegro has established an advisory team to examine issues highlighted by The Arizona Republic concerning rate increases granted to Sunshine Residential Homes. The statement notes that while this company received a 30% increase, other providers were denied similar adjustments. The team is expected to assist in reviewing records related to the reported donor relationship.

The Arizona Republic reported that Sunshine Residential Homes was granted a significant rate increase during a time when other group-home providers faced rejections. Financial records referenced by the publication indicate that the company issued shareholder payments despite claiming losses. The article also mentions that the agency was under budget pressure and directed to reduce its reliance on group homes.

A report from the Congressional Research Service explains that recipients of federal contracts are permitted to engage in political activities only with non-federal resources. It clarifies that federal contract funds cannot be used for political purposes as per established regulations. The report details oversight mechanisms intended to prevent preferential treatment linked to political contributions.

Gress, born in 1988, represents Arizona’s 4th District in the state House. His previous roles include serving as a legislative budget analyst and later as Director of the Governor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Public Administration from Syracuse University.
