Steve Cortes, President of the League of American Workers, has said that the average age of first-time homebuyers has reached 40 years old, a figure that contrasts with Generation Z’s aspirations to purchase homes earlier. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“Average age of first time homebuyers is now 40,” said Cortes. “Yet a whopping 88% of Gen Z voters say they want to buy a home in their 20’s or 30’s. See my polling on young adults super important!”

According to Cortes, his comment on X is part of a broader effort to highlight the economic pressures facing young Americans, particularly those related to housing. In his post, he noted that the “average age of first-time homebuyers is now 40” and linked this data point to his polling on Generation Z, which shows overwhelming aspirations to buy homes earlier in adulthood. By directing readers to his longer essay titled “What Young Americans Want: America’s Future Shifts Right,” Cortes framed the housing issue as one aspect of a larger political and cultural realignment among young voters.

In an article by Cortes Investigates titled “What Young Americans Want: America’s Future Shifts Right,” Steve Cortes cites a new national survey of more than 2,000 registered voters aged 18–25. He argues that young Americans are moving toward a patriotic, populist right. The piece explains that these voters strongly support free speech, oppose biological males competing in women’s sports, and are skeptical of foreign interventions. Cortes presents this data as evidence of a durable realignment rather than a temporary trend and connects it to concrete issues like housing affordability, economic anxiety, and distrust of establishment narratives.

Cortes Investigates’ polling highlights that Generation Z voters are both aspirational and economically squeezed. The findings show that young Americans desire stable lives rich with opportunities—owning homes, building families, and enjoying prosperity—yet they face challenging economic realities such as inflation, tight job markets, and escalating housing costs. By mentioning that 88% of Gen Z voters want to buy a home in their 20s or 30s while the average first-time buyer age is now 40, Cortes uses his survey work to argue that current policies are failing a generation otherwise inclined toward responsibility, ownership, and a more conservative outlook.

Steve Cortes is Founder and President of the League of American Workers and serves as senior political advisor to CatholicVote. He is also a former senior advisor to President Trump and JD Vance and has been a commentator for Fox News and CNN. Cortes regularly releases documentaries and columns at cortesinvestigates.com.
